Are sconces a good fit for a kitchen at all?

Yes, especially on accent walls, over open shelving, or framing the cooker hood. For installations near the sink or splash zone, choose damp-rated IP44. For dry walls (breakfast nook, pantry corner), any indoor model works. Sconces add warmth to kitchens that are usually over-lit by downlights and pendants.

Won't a sconce just get in the way of cabinets?

Plan placement first. Sconces work on walls without upper cabinets, beside a window, or framing the cooker hood. If your kitchen has continuous upper cabinetry, sconces are not the right choice. Use undercabinet lights or pendants over the island instead. For partial-cabinet walls or open shelving, sconces fit naturally.

Should kitchen sconces be damp-rated like in a bathroom?

Only if installed within splash zone of the sink (typically 60 cm from the tap). Damp-rated IP44 is enough, you do not need full IP65 like a bathroom shower. For sconces elsewhere in the kitchen, indoor-rated is fine. Check the product page for the IP rating before installing near water.
