Can a swing-arm reading lamp replace a bedside lamp?

Yes, often a better solution. A swing-arm lamp clamps to the headboard or sits on the bedside table with an adjustable arm, so the light source moves with your reading position. Frees the bedside table for books, glasses, water. Both Visual Comfort floor and table swing-arm models work for bedside use.

Where should the light source on a reading lamp point?

For seated reading, the light source should sit above your shoulder and behind your head, pointing forward and down onto the book. For bed reading, the source sits at shoulder height to your side. Swing-arm and articulated lamps let you position the head precisely. Avoid lamps that direct light forward at eye level, they cause glare.

Can I read in bed with just a floor lamp behind the bed?

For occasional reading, yes. A 145-160 cm arc floor lamp positioned behind one side of the bed can light a book area. For nightly reading, dedicated bedside lamps or sconces are better, since the floor lamp lights only one side and creates uneven distribution if both partners want to read.
