Alabaster

Alabaster is a natural stone. It is not glass, not resin, not a coating, and it is quarried in only a small number of countries in the world. It has been used in lighting because of one property: its crystalline structure lets light travel through the body of the stone, which is what produces the deep, warm glow of an alabaster fixture. Alabaster has almost no colour of its own. It is white, close to crystal, so the bulb you install decides the tone in the room, not the stone. In our own catalogue alabaster chandeliers, pendants, wall lights, ceiling fixtures and table lamps all rely on the same effect: a natural stone that carries whatever light sits behind it.

Alabaster sits inside the family of translucent stones used in lighting, but it does not behave like the others. Onyx and the wider group of backlit stones carry pronounced coloured veins and can read one colour unlit and another when switched on. Alabaster does not shift like that. It has almost no colour of its own, so it stays white and simply glows. Every alabaster stone still has veins running through the body of the block, and because a block reveals its pattern only once it is cut, no two alabaster pendants are identical. Two pieces from the same collection will not be identical either. If you want a translucent stone that adds colour to the light, look at onyx; if you want a stone that carries whatever light you install through it, alabaster is the material to choose.

An alabaster fixture is not priced by the metalwork alone. The stone itself is quarried, cut into blocks and then shaped into panels or bowls, and there is very little of it in the world. Alabaster is finite, in the same way gold is finite, and world reserves keep shrinking, so the material naturally keeps rising in price. On top of that, every panel is unique. A block reveals its pattern only when it is cut, and nobody, including the manufacturer, can predict exactly how the vein will run through it. That is why an alabaster pendant or an alabaster chandelier reads as a one-of-a-kind piece in a way a painted metal fixture does not. Natural materials such as stone and wood have always been in fashion in high-end interiors, and alabaster carries a story a coating cannot.

Alabaster is used in lighting because it gives a beautiful, deep, intimate tone. When you switch on an alabaster chandelier the light is not bright; it is closer to a boudoir light, and that is why the material works well as an anchor piece rather than as the only light in the room.

• The bulb decides the colour, not the stone. Alabaster only refracts the source you put behind it. A warmer bulb reads warm through the stone, a cooler bulb reads whiter. The stone itself adds no colour.
• Fine as the main fixture with technical support. An alabaster chandelier is happy as the main visual piece when there is technical light in place, recessed spots or projectors, so the room does not depend on the alabaster glow for functional light.
• Best case: a filling element. With technical lighting already handled, an alabaster fixture becomes an expensive, rich looking layer that carries the atmosphere rather than the lumens.
• Layer, do not overload. One alabaster piece per room, or one per zone in an open plan, tends to read better than several alabaster fixtures competing for the same wall.

The same logic applies to alabaster wall lights and alabaster ceiling lights: use them as decorative light and layer them with something technical.

Alabaster is imitated the same way marble is imitated. The two common fakes are plastic copies of alabaster panels and clear glass with a photograph of alabaster laminated onto one face. The test that works every time is about how the pattern travels through the body of the piece.

1. Real alabaster is a natural stone and is coloured through the mass. The pattern goes all the way through the body, not just across one surface.
2. Look at the cut edge. On a real alabaster panel the vein runs from the top, crosses the side, and finishes on the inner face. It passes through the body of the piece.
3. On a fake the pattern lives on one side only. It is a film laminated onto glass or plastic, so at the cut edge you see clear glass, or plastic, and no vein continues onto the inner face.

Alabaster is effectively eternal as a material. Nothing will happen to the stone itself over time. The care regime exists to protect the surface pattern, not the block. Treat an alabaster fixture the way you treat any natural stone at home.

• No strongly coloured liquids on the surface. Wine, and champagne when the bottle is opened, will not come out of alabaster once they soak in.
• No abrasive products. Alabaster is soft compared to granite. Anything that would scratch marble will scratch alabaster.
• No aggressive chemistry. Damp cleaning only, water and a soft cloth. Skip solvents and household chemicals.
• Day to day: a duster. Dust and a duster, that is the routine. The stone does the rest.

The same rules apply whether the piece is a large chandelier, a wall light, or a shade on an alabaster table lamp.
