Glass

Glass is the widest material category in designer lighting and the least standardised. In our catalogue the word covers four related but distinct products: mouth-blown Murano glass from Venetian islands, machine-pressed and mould-cast glass from northern-European makers, opal and cased glass built as two fused layers, and blown or hand-shaped clear glass used across contemporary Italian collections. All four transmit light; they do not transmit it the same way.

• Mouth-blown Murano glass. The historic Italian standard, still hand-blown on Murano in furnaces working at 1000C. Each piece has small internal variations, faint asymmetry and a slightly uneven wall thickness that read as craft, not as a defect. Light passes through with a soft, warm halo because the wall itself carries small imperfections that scatter it.
• Blown clear and colored glass. Contemporary Italian houses like Vistosi and Oty Light hand-blow clear, amber, smoke and cased-color forms into architectural profiles. Reads cleaner and more graphic than classical Murano; the color sits in the glass wall, not in a coating, so it does not fade or scratch off.
• Opal and cased glass. Two fused layers, typically a white opal inner over a clear or colored outer. Diffuses the source completely, so you see the glass shape, not the bulb. Used across Visual Comfort, Vistosi and Oty for pendants and wall lights where the design intent is a soft, even glow rather than sparkle.
• Frosted, seeded and ribbed treatments. Surface finishes applied after forming. Frosted (satinato) softens the light without hiding the source; seeded holds internal air bubbles as a decorative effect; ribbed (rigato) produces vertical light-and-shadow patterning on nearby walls when the fixture is lit.
• K9 and lead crystal. A related material category with its own dedicated crystal hub. Higher refractive index than window glass, cut into facets and drops for prismatic sparkle rather than diffusion.

When you are choosing a glass fixture, look first at the process and the surface treatment, then at the color. A mouth-blown opal pendant and a pressed clear-glass pendant of the same shape will light a kitchen island very differently. If you are specifying for a client and the room lighting brief matters, request a physical sample or a Milan showroom viewing before committing.

Glass is the largest attribute in our catalogue after brass, and the material where our European sourcing shows most clearly. We carry Murano and contemporary Italian glass from Vistosi, Oty Light and IDL, plus Visual Comfort and Quintiesse for the American designer and transitional lines. • Vistosi, Diadema, Diamante, Damasco, Poc and Puppa. Mouth-blown Murano in contemporary silhouettes. Diadema builds a full crystal-and-glass cascade for double-height entries; Diamante and Damasco are architectural pendants for dining tables; Poc and Puppa are compact wall and small-pendant profiles for hallways and secondary bedrooms. All hand-blown on Murano, all native 220-240V, made in Italy to European standards.
• Oty Light, Pop, Club, Moma and Cubello. Blown Italian glass in architectural forms. The Pop family covers pendants, spot-track pieces and above-mirror wall lights in a coherent visual system; Club is a large statement suspension for restaurants and open-plan residential; Moma and Cubello give you smaller wall and ceiling profiles in the same glass language.
• IDL, Acropora and Endless. Murano cascade and multi-tier chandeliers for entries, staircases and hospitality projects. Acropora reads coral-like and organic; Endless is the linear multi-arm suspension for long dining tables and reception counters. Available in clear, amber and cased-color.
• Visual Comfort, Talia, Morton and Danube. American contemporary glass. Talia is a globe-cluster chandelier and flush-mount system with hand-blown clear glass; Morton is a table lamp with a signature amber-glass body; Danube covers hand-blown clear glass table lamps for entry consoles and bedside tables.
• Visual Comfort, AERIN. Selected AERIN Lauder pieces with mouth-blown clear or opal glass paired with hand-rubbed brass and polished nickel armatures. The AERIN glass is read as jewellery, not as a lantern; smaller in scale than the equivalent brass or crystal AERIN pieces.
• Quintiesse, glass-and-crystal hybrids. European contemporary pendants and wall lights combining glass shades with a crystal accent, priced below the American designer families. Useful when the brief needs the look of Italian blown glass at a project budget rather than a designer budget.

Glass is more forgiving than crystal on scale, but less forgiving on bulb choice, cleaning and shipping. Below are the specification rules we apply on live projects, whether the client is a designer specifying for a private residence, a project buyer sourcing a multi-unit hospitality install, or a private buyer choosing a single anchor piece.

1. Bulb temperature and dimmer behaviour. Opal and cased glass diffuse the source completely, so the bulb temperature IS the visible color of the fixture. Use 2700K for warm-white residential; 3000K for slightly cooler kitchens and bathrooms; avoid 4000K in living areas because it reads clinical through opal. Always specify dimmable LED (dim-to-warm if the room brief allows) because glass fixtures are usually the primary ambient light of the room, not accent.
2. Clear glass behaves differently than opal. Clear glass shows the bulb. Specify a decorative-filament LED or a candle-tip LED in E14/E27 to look intentional, not utility. Frosted (satinato) sits between opal and clear; the bulb shape is visible but muted, so a plain globe LED works.
3. Scaling above island and dining table. Formula: pendant diameter in inches equals roughly one-half to two-thirds the island/table shorter dimension in inches, hung with the bottom of the fixture 75-90 cm above the surface (30-36 inches). For long tables, use a linear multi-arm (like IDL Endless) or three pendants spaced evenly rather than one large chandelier.
4. Cleaning mouth-blown vs pressed. Mouth-blown glass (Murano, Vistosi, Oty) is thinner-walled and softer than pressed glass. Clean with a soft microfiber cloth and neutral glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, never directly onto the fixture. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners on cased-color glass, they can dull the outer layer.
5. Shipping and packaging. Every Murano and Italian blown-glass piece leaves the maker in custom foam-lined crates. Delivery across Europe within 14 days for in-stock references. Made-to-order Murano runs 6-10 weeks depending on the collection. Do not accept a fixture that arrives without foam blocks separating each glass element; refuse delivery and document with photos.
6. Single anchor vs matched sets. A single Vistosi cascade over the entry stair reads as a statement. Three matched Vistosi pendants over an island read as an install.
