Wood on a lighting fixture is one of the vaguest words in the catalogue because a piece labelled Wood in the finish column can be five very different things, each with its own weight, sheen, longevity and price. Knowing the difference before specifying is the difference between a piece that ages into the room over a decade and a piece that reads plastic-adjacent from year two.

Turned solid wood. The piece is a single piece of wood on a lathe, then oiled, waxed or hand-rubbed. Grain is visible and continuous around the whole silhouette. Visual Comfort uses this on the Roark Modular Chandelier (40 inch and 50 inch versions in Vintage Oak), on the Grace 36 Chandelier in Weathered Oak, and on the Ferrelli Floor Lamp in Weathered Oak. This is the most expensive category and the one that ages best.

Wood-and-metal composite. Solid wood elements are combined with cast metal on the same fixture, giving both material warmth and structural strength. Visual Comfort's Piaf family (Grande, Large, Oversized, Two-Tier) pairs Ebonized Oak with Aged Iron. Avenir Medium Chandelier pairs Weathered Oak with Antique Forged Iron. Radford Medium Chandelier and Rigby Grande Chandelier pair Natural Rift Oak or Natural Oak with Soft Brass. Quintiesse Angelo family (5 lt, 6 lt and 9 lt Chandelier plus the 8 lt Isle Chandelier and 1 lt Wall Light) is Weathered Oak Wood with Antique Forged Iron Texture. These pieces are the workhorse of the wood edit.

Waxed bamboo. A softer, lighter grain than oak, native to coastal and Japandi interiors. Visual Comfort's Dalfern family (Large Chandelier, Desk Lamp, Medium Single Sconce and Petite Reading Floor Lamp) is Waxed Bamboo with Natural Brass, and reads bright and warm rather than dense. Bamboo is a grass, not a hardwood, but structurally behaves like a light hardwood on a lighting frame.

Woven rattan, wicker and cane. Rattan and wicker are wood-adjacent but not solid wood. The piece is a metal frame wrapped or woven with hand-woven natural fibre. Visual Comfort's Basden family (Extra Large, Grande and Medium Single Tier Chandelier, Linear Chandelier, Pharmacy Lamp, Medium and 16 inch Tail Sconce), Biscayne Large Wrapped Chandelier, Darlana Large and Medium Wrapped Ring Chandelier and Wrapped Lantern, Halwell 8, 18 and 24 inch Picture Light, Corinne 24 inch Wrapped Hanging Shade, Linley Extra Large Hanging Shade, Nancy 18 inch and 25 inch Woven Hanging Shade, and Wimberley Single and Double Library Wall Light and Medium Wrapped Floor Lamp are all rattan-wrapped or wicker. The material behaves like wood in a room (reads warm and natural) but is not a hardwood and needs different care.

Weathered and driftwood finishes on painted or stained bases. Quintiesse Lakehouse (6 lt Outdoor Chandelier, 1 lt Small and Medium Wall Lantern) is Aged Zinc with Driftwood Grey glass. The driftwood reference is in the glass tone, not in a wood element on the fixture. Reading finish descriptions carefully avoids ordering a piece with no actual wood in it.

None of these are interchangeable, and species matters: Weathered Oak, Vintage Oak, Natural Oak, Natural Rift Oak, Ebonized Oak, Burnished Birch, Dark Teak, Mahogany, French Waxed Wood and Waxed Bamboo each read differently under LED and each pair with different room woods. Every wood-family fixture at VC Gallery is a specified finish from Visual Comfort or Quintiesse, and the finish name matches the manufacturer's own vocabulary.

The wood edit at VC Gallery is deliberately narrower than the metal and glass edits, because true wood lighting is a specialist category. The two brands that carry it well are Visual Comfort & Co and Quintiesse, and their signature families are listed below.

Visual Comfort Ebonized Oak. The Piaf family by Ian K. Fowler is the heart of the ebonized programme. Piaf Large Chandelier, Piaf Grande Chandelier, Piaf Grande Two-Tier Chandelier and Piaf Oversized Chandelier all combine Ebonized Oak turnings with Aged Iron and a Linen shade. The look is moody, layered and reads at scale, best in double-height entryways and formal dining rooms. The Piaf Large Two Light Linear Pendant carries the same finish into kitchen island and hallway installations.

Visual Comfort Weathered Oak. Weathered Oak is the lighter, greyer end of the oak programme. Grace 36 Chandelier is the flagship in pure Weathered Oak. Avenir Medium Chandelier layers Weathered Oak with Antique Forged Iron for a rustic-elegant register. Ferrelli Floor Lamp brings the same finish into reading corners and living rooms.

Visual Comfort Vintage Oak, Roark Modular. The Roark Modular Chandelier (40 inch and 50 inch versions) is a linear geometric fixture designed for open-plan rooms, made from solid Vintage Oak. It reads as a piece of furniture as much as a light, and is the most architectural wood piece in the edit.

Visual Comfort Natural Oak, Natural Rift Oak, Rigby and Radford. Rigby Grande Chandelier and Rigby XL Chandelier pair Natural Oak with Soft Brass and a Linen shade, sitting between traditional and mid-century modern. Rigby Medium Bridge Arm Floor Lamp and Rigby Small Sconce carry the same family downstairs. Radford Medium Chandelier and Radford Small Sconce use Natural Rift Oak with Natural Brass. Both are American designer-led families with a gentle wood presence rather than a dominant one.

Visual Comfort Waxed Bamboo, Dalfern. Dalfern by Marie Flanigan is the tropical-coastal family. Dalfern Large Chandelier, Dalfern Desk Lamp, Dalfern Medium Single Sconce and Dalfern Petite Reading Floor Lamp all use Waxed Bamboo with Natural Brass and either White Parchment or a linen shade. The bamboo reads much lighter than oak and fits Mediterranean, coastal and Japandi rooms.

Visual Comfort woven rattan and wicker programme. This is the deepest single sub-family in the wood edit. The Basden family (Extra Large Chandelier, Grande Three Tier, Medium Single Tier, Extra Large Linear Chandelier, Medium Pharmacy Lamp, Medium and 16 inch Tail Sconce, and Medium Sconce) uses Antique-Burnished Brass with Natural Rattan Linen throughout. Biscayne Large Wrapped Chandelier and Darlana Large and Medium Wrapped Ring Chandelier and Wrapped Lantern carry the same brass-and-rattan register at larger scale. Corinne 24 inch Wrapped Hanging Shade, Linley Extra Large Hanging Shade, Nancy 18 and 25 inch Woven Hanging Shade, Wimberley Single and Double Library Wall Light and Wimberley Medium Wrapped Floor Lamp are all wicker or woven-rattan led. Halwell 8, 18 and 24 inch Picture Light adds Natural Woven Rattan to art walls. The whole programme is defined by a soft, beach-house register and reads bright and airy.

Visual Comfort mixed wood specials. Avedon Small Table Lamp uses Plaster White with Rattan Linen; Avedon 11 inch Cordless Accent Lamp is Natural Rattan Linen. Clovis Medium Chandelier is Antique-Burnished Brass with Natural Wicker. Crenelle 20 inch and 27 inch Stacked Table Lamp uses Burnished Birch turnings with a Linen shade. Laken Medium Articulating Wall Light is Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass with Natural Rattan and a White shade. Lignum Medium Table Lamp is Dark Oak with Dark Rattan Linen. Quintiesse Weathered Oak, Angelo. The Angelo family (5 Light Chandelier, 6 Light Chandelier, 9 Light Chandelier, 8 Light Isle Chandelier and 1 Light Wall Light) is Quintiesse's flagship wood programme, in Weathered Oak Wood with Antique Forged Iron Texture. Register is farmhouse and country-house, with visible grain and forged-iron detailing. The 8 Light Isle Chandelier suits long dining tables and kitchen islands; the wall light picks up the same finish for corridors and sconce pairs.

Quintiesse driftwood-toned glass and natural rattan. Lakehouse 6 Light Outdoor Chandelier, Lakehouse 1 Light Small Wall Lantern and Lakehouse 1 Light Medium Wall Lantern combine Aged Zinc with Driftwood Grey Clear Seeded Glass. The wood reference is in the glass tone rather than in a wood body, and the piece is rated for outdoor coastal installations. Wood is a living material, and lighting fixtures with wood elements need specification and care that painted-metal fixtures do not. The rules below are what separates a wood lighting piece that ages into the room over a decade from a piece that dries out, splits or fades within three years.

Match the fixture wood to the room wood. A Weathered Oak chandelier over a walnut dining table will fight the wood; a Weathered Oak chandelier over pale oak or limewashed floors will read as one gesture. Ebonized Oak wants dark or contrast rooms; Vintage Oak Roark wants mid-century walnut and teak; Waxed Bamboo Dalfern wants light travertine, natural fibres and coastal palettes; Natural Oak Rigby is the most flexible and reads with almost any wood floor. Consider room woods first and choose the fixture second.

Do not mix rattan with heavy stained hardwood in the same room. The visual weight is too different. Rattan-wrapped Basden and Darlana pieces want lighter wood palettes (limewashed oak, blonde birch, natural teak). Ebonized Oak Piaf and dark solid wood pieces work in rooms with walnut, mahogany or dark-stained oak. A room with both reads busy.

Where wood lighting belongs. Mid-century modern interiors, Scandinavian and Nordic minimalism, coastal and Mediterranean palettes, biophilic and Japandi schemes, farmhouse and country-house rooms, kitchens with butcher-block counters, dining rooms with a signature wood table, reading corners in a library, and covered outdoor patios (for the outdoor-rated Quintiesse Lakehouse family only).

Where wood lighting struggles. Bathrooms with poor ventilation (humidity above sixty percent will warp untreated wood over two to three years), rooms with strong direct sun for more than four hours a day (natural oak greys, and Weathered Oak can bleach further), rooms with wood-burning fireplaces used daily (soot settles on turned wood and darkens the finish unevenly), and outdoor uncovered installations except for pieces explicitly rated outdoor.

Pairing rules. Wood lighting wants a warm metal partner. Weathered Oak and Vintage Oak read best with Antique-Burnished Brass, Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass or Aged Iron. Ebonized Oak reads best with Aged Iron or Bronze. Waxed Bamboo reads best with Natural Brass or Soft Brass. Do not pair wood-body fixtures with Polished Nickel or Polished Chrome. The temperature clash makes both finishes read cheap.

Bulb temperature is 2700K for warm wood, 3000K for cooler wood. Ebonized Oak, Weathered Oak, Waxed Bamboo and Mahogany all read best under 2700K LED. Natural Oak, Natural Rift Oak and rattan wrappings read best under 3000K. Anything above 3500K washes the wood grain out and reads clinical. Visual Comfort candelabra pieces take standard LED replacement bulbs; specify 2700K or 3000K at order. Quintiesse Angelo family uses E14 candle bulbs.

Care. Dust with a dry microfibre cloth every two weeks. For turned solid wood (Roark, Grace, Ferrelli) apply a light coat of furniture-grade beeswax once a year to feed the finish. For wood-and-metal composites (Piaf, Avenir, Radford, Rigby, Angelo) dust the wood elements with a soft brush and wipe the metal separately with a barely-damp cloth. For waxed bamboo (Dalfern), a soft brush and a dry cloth is enough; never use water on bamboo. For woven rattan and wicker (Basden, Darlana, Halwell, Wimberley, Corinne, Linley, Nancy) vacuum with a soft brush attachment every month to remove dust from the weave; never wipe with water, which distorts the fibre. Do not use furniture polish, spray cleaners, silicone sprays or any solvent-based cleaner on any wood or rattan finish, ever.
