Brass

Brass is a material. In plain terms it is the alloy that lighting is actually made from when a maker wants a gold-looking fixture that is gold all the way through. Gold is a finish, not a material used in lighting production. Nobody makes lamps out of real gold, gold is used for jewellery, it is far too expensive for a chandelier.

The alloy itself is called latun; in its own natural state its colour is very close to gold, which is why brass has been the go-to material for warm metal fixtures for centuries. When you look at our brass chandeliers or our brass wall lights collection, the metal you see is the same metal all the way through the piece. It is not a coating, it is not a plating, it is the fixture itself.

This is the first question a serious buyer or specifier should ask before ordering a warm metal fixture: solid brass, or a brass-look finish? On VC Gallery, when we say brass, we mean the material.

Two fixtures can look the same in a catalogue photograph and behave very differently once installed. A brass fixture is coloured through the entire mass of the piece. A gold-finished fixture is coated on the surface only. Roughly speaking, they take stainless steel and paint it gold, then it goes into the catalogue photo looking identical to a brass piece next to it.

The visual difference on a product listing is almost none. The structural difference matters over years, and it matters the day a bolt is unscrewed for cleaning or a piece is scraped during moving.

The reason brass has become the standard alloy for warm-metal designer lighting is practical, not decorative. Gold is used for jewellery and similar objects where a small quantity of pure metal is set in a very expensive piece. Applying that logic to a chandelier is not viable. A single dining-room chandelier can weigh 20 kilograms; the raw-material cost of making it in real gold would put it into a different category of object entirely.

Brass solves the problem elegantly. In its own natural state the alloy is warm and gold-toned, close enough to real gold that once installed and lit the difference is invisible to the eye. The material is not cheap, but it is proportional to the object. It is a natural material, resistant to damage, coloured through the whole mass, and it can be worked into the intricate silhouettes that designer lighting requires.

This is the same logic behind our natural stone fixtures. The material is what it is all the way through. You are not looking at a coating on top of another material, you are looking at the material itself. Brass and stone are the two families where this material-through-and-through principle carries the piece.

A brass fixture will darken over time, and given enough time can develop a green patina on the surface. This is not damage. It is oxidation. What drives the change is contact with oxygen in the air, not humidity, and a brass piece will darken in a dry Milan apartment on the same trajectory as in a coastal home; it is the metal reacting with air, not with water.

The clearest way to understand what is happening is the silver analogy. There are silver fixtures, very expensive, made of real silver, and there are silver spoons and cutlery of the same material. Over time they darken and blacken. Nothing bad has happened to them. Clean them and they shine again. Then there is ordinary painted steel that just looks like silver; it is cheaper, and if the paint chips there is no silver underneath. Brass sits on the real-material side of that comparison.

Brass does not rust. Painted steel with a gold finish can rust once the coating chips and moisture reaches the base metal. Brass will oxidise into a warmer, deeper patina, then eventually into green if left untouched for a very long time, but the underlying material is the same and it can be cleaned back to its original brightness.

Brass is eternal, but it is not maintenance-free. A brass fixture needs specific metal care, and the good news is that unlike a painted finish, whatever you do to a brass piece is reversible because the material underneath the surface is the same material as the surface itself. A gold-finished fixture that darkens or chips has no such recovery path; the coating is gone.

1. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. Simple, boring, effective. The main enemy of a bright brass finish is a slow film of dust that traps humidity and accelerates oxidation. A minute of dusting per fixture, once a month, prevents most of what people mistake for damage later.
2. Use a dedicated brass cleaner for restoration, not a household polish. If a brass piece has darkened and you want it back to its day-one brightness, use a product formulated for brass. Test on a small hidden area first; some products remove not just oxidation but any decorative patina the maker applied on purpose.
3. Do not use ammonia or bleach-based cleaners. These will attack the alloy and can leave permanent marks. If in doubt about a product, use warm water and a soft cloth; the metal itself is not fragile, it is the wrong chemicals that cause damage.
4. Accept the patina if you love the material. Many designers specify brass precisely because it ages. If the client wants a warm, lived-in patina, the fixture does the work on its own; simply keep it dust-free and let the surface develop naturally.

Visually, on a product listing photo, brass and gold on our site look the same. That is not an accident of catalogue design; that is the point. Both finish families are engineered to give you the same warm, gold-toned metal accent in a room. The decision is not about how the piece looks on day one, it is about what you want the piece to be underneath the surface, and how you want it to behave in year five.

Choose brass if you want a natural material coloured through the whole mass. Choose brass if you are comfortable with a finish that will darken and develop character over time; if you accept that a scratch reveals more brass underneath, not a foreign metal; if you plan to keep the fixture for a decade and beyond and want the option to restore it to its original brightness. Choose brass if the alabaster shade or the walnut cabinet next to it is also a real material, and you want the metal to sit at the same level of honesty as the rest of the room.

Choose a gold finish if you want a controlled, stable, day-one appearance and you accept that the coating is the finish; if the fixture is decorative more than structural; if the budget calls for a lower price point and the piece will not be handled frequently.
